Seminars and support groups
After recovering from the initial shock of diagnosis, many people will want to gather information about their disease, its treatment and how their lives might be affected. While your medical specialist will provide valuable information and answer many of your questions, you may be looking for additional information or support.
In addition to our newsletters and booklets and factsheets, we hold regular educational seminars in Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Townsville, Mackay, and Cairns. These disease-specific seminars cover a range of topics including treatment; management of side effects; research and trials; diet and nutrition; stress management; physical activity; and adapting to change. They also provide an opportunity to hear from specialist doctors and allied health professionals, while meeting people in a similar situation.
Our free education seminars include sessions on the following diseases:
- Childhood leukaemia
- Myelodysplastic Syndromes
- Myeloproliferative Neoplasms
Our events calendar lists seminars as they are scheduled.
It’s all about me!
It’s all about me! is a two-part workshop series, run in Brisbane, which aims to enhance the overall health and well-being of those living through and beyond a blood cancer. The workshop series gives cancer survivors and their carers the skills, support and confidence to get the best out of their lives and take control. Topics covered in the workshop include mindfulness, stretching and relaxation techniques, and physical health.
The workshop includes a segment on ‘Taking Control’, run by qualified executive and life coach Arthur Alexander. The program was instigated in 1987 in recognition that patients needed more than just medical care, but also emotional care that would give them skills to deals with the many issues involved in living with a life-threatening illness.
