In the business of beating blood cancer!

Westpac team_blog

This year, the Leukaemia Foundation received a huge amount of support from our friends in the business community.

As we approach the end of the year we wanted to look back on just a few ways businesses across Queensland have supported us and in turn their local communities in 2015. Although we can’t mention everyone, we know every single contribution brings us closer to beating blood cancers. A big thank you to everyone involved over the last 12 months!

March | World’s Greatest Shave

Several of our corporate partners got on board with the World’s Greatest Shave in March 2015, with many employees shaving or colouring, and others supporting by attending events and making a donation. Aon Risk Services ($2,974 raised), HP ($1,852 raised), Queensland Police Service ($20,010 raised), JBS Australia ($19, 511 raised), and Zarraffa’s Coffee ($14,024 raised) were just some of the organisations to get involved.

The business community got really creative with their fundraising, too! Icon Cancer Care got behind their pharmacist Thomas Wong, with one of Icon’s haematologists promising to have his head shaved if Thomas raised more than $10,000.  His total was $13,702 and so haematologist Dr Ashish Misra had his head shaved – by Thomas himself!

We also had some fantastic involvement at the Mirra Shave Party (pictured above), supported by Nova 106.9Laing O’Rouke, Shiavello, Tappr and Windsor Recruitment, which raised over $15,000. Stefan also joined in and provided hairdressers for the day.

Three Westpac managers took on the challenge to shave their heads, and engaged their entire Brisbane staff in their fundraising activities including a sausage sizzle outside one of their CBD branches. Their team raised nearly $20,000!

The Billiard Shop in Toowoomba donated a pool table and accessory kit as an incentive prize for the corporate team who raised the most money from the region. More than $24,000 was raised with the winning team raising $7,000 alone.

April | Cooking for Chemo

This year we introduced program called Cooking for Chemo that aims to help patients going through chemotherapy with diet, nutrition and cooking. This program was made possible thanks to our partnership with Icon Cancer Care and their donation to help fund the program.

May | IGA Car Rally

Over $34,000 was raised during the IGA Charity Car Rally when supporters embarked on a leisurely tour of the beautiful Tropical North Queensland region while raising money for the Leukaemia Foundation.

June | U.G.L.Y. Bartender

Australian Leisure and Hospitality Group supported the U.G.L.Y. (Understanding, Generous, Likeable, You) Bartender of the Year competition with all 119 of their hotels and pub venues across Queensland participating. Additionally, hospitality training company, Zealifi invited the Leukaemia Foundation to attend one of their sessions, with 15% of the attendees signing up to be a part of the competition.

July | IGA Race Day

Sponsored by IGA, the flagship annual race day in Cairns raised over $74,000 in 2015.

Parry Nissan2August

Thanks to Parry Nissan in North Queensland (pictured), our Townsville office received a new vehicle to help our staff reach more people in the community within Townsville and surrounding regions.

September | Tour de Office

Greenleaf Engineers chose the Leukaemia Foundation as their charity to support in the Tour de Office  cycle challenge. They raised $6,525 – and our CEO, Bill Petch, even got involved!

September | Saying thank you with Telstra

We love to make sure our supporters know how grateful we are for their donations and this year we launched our Thank You Project. With the help of volunteers from Telstra, over 600 calls were made to our supporters who had donated after receiving our Leukaemia Foundation News publication. We had such a positive response to this initiative, from both donors and volunteers, this program will continue into 2016.

October | Light the Night

Our corporate supporters again got involved in our annual twilight lantern walk,  Light the Night (pictured below). Pronto Direct joined us as a state sponsor, providing all the printed material for the event. Icon Cancer Care, Janssen, Telstra, Toll, Bridgestone and Hitachi were also a major part of the event’s success which raised over $230,000.

November | Melbourne Cup

With the support of pearl jewellers Paspaley, which donated a $5000 prize, the event was also supported by gentSac , Arbonne, Pixel & Halide and Bramble Haus helping to raise a total of $6,554.

December | Garden ProjectIcon

After raising $3,000 in 2015, GHD has also donated their skills as designers and planners to develop a concept for a new community garden space at the Leukaemia Foundation head office. Additionally, they rolled up their sleeves to form a working bee to take the design from concept to reality!

December | Christmas Appeal 2015

Many of our business partners joined our individual donors over the festive season by donating and sending back special baubles with messages of support and love, which will be hung in our patient accommodation villages.

Other support

Queensland’s business community also supported the Leukaemia Foundation by raising money at their own corporate events such as luncheons and conferences as well as making corporate donations collected by employees and management. Thanks to Paediatric Dental Group,  Bandag Manufacturing, Morgans Milton, Quest Kelvin Grove, Qube Ports and Power Tynan, to name just a few, for their generosity in 2015.
